Frank Camorra: My West Melbourne

19 January 2018

Living close enough to the city so that the daily work commute is no more than a quick walk from home, yet still being far enough away to escape the hustle and bustle is an important lifestyle factor for me, but one that is often hard to balance. Melbourne can be an overwhelming place at times, but that’s why I love my suburb, West Melbourne. A suburb that is often overlooked when it comes to comparing our city’s best restaurants, bars and cafes, West Melbourne to me is much more than just a ‘place’ – it is my home and my playground. With an abundance of hidden local gems, there is never a shortage of things to do and with four kids that is very important! Whether it’s weekends spent in the sun at the park or relaxing at a local restaurant filling up on some delicious food, West Melbourne is one of this city’s great suburbs and in my opinion, one of the most underrated when it comes to food and culture. Don’t believe me? Keep reading and learn about some of my favourite local hot spots.

West End

Clever Polly’s

I absolutely love all that is interesting and unique, and Clever Polly’s is just that. A fantastic little wine bar located on Victoria street, the team here specialise in natural wines that are perfectly paired with a beautifully crafted Japanese menu. Locally owned and run, Clever Polly’s is the sort of place that you can pop in to after work, or on the weekend, for a glass of wine and a variety of interesting and innovative snacks.

Three Crowns Hotel

Every neighbourhood needs a good local pub and Three Crowns Hotel is up there with the best of them. With friendly staff and a relaxed environment, Three Crowns attracts a variety of different community members making it a fantastic place to meet new people! The perfect place to farewell the working week with a beer on a Friday night, this pub also has a simple but delicious menu so you can take the night off from cooking (not everyone loves it as much as me!).

West End

Flagstaff Gardens

Walking distance from home, Flagstaff Gardens are in my opinion one of the best and most beautiful parks in Melbourne. With an array of amenities including playgrounds, basketball courts and BBQ areas, the gardens are a great place to relax when you have some free time. Best of all, Flagstaff Gardens has its very own bowls club of which I hope to become a member when I have some more free time on my hands.

Sausages Made Simple

They say that if you want something done right you should do it yourself. Sausages Made Simple is testament to that. Offering a range of classes, equipment and product for locals to learn, make and share, the lovely team will teach you how to make your own home-made sausages, cured meats and salami. The good news is, if you’re not the DIY type the store also sells freshly made sausages and meats daily, meaning you can still impress at your next family BBQ! Victoria Market

West End

Although not strictly West Melbourne according to google maps, Victoria Market is right on the border and only a 9-minute walk from West End. Being so close to fresh produce is very important to me, and the market is one of the biggest reasons I choose to live in West Melbourne. It has become a Saturday morning ritual for my wife and I. We take our trolley on a stroll to the market, have breakfast at Pickets Deli and then grab some seafood and seasonal vegetables to cook a special weekend feast for the family.

Adj. Café – West End

Situated at the brand new West End development in the heart of West Melbourne, Adj. is as central as it gets. With natural interiors made up of raw wooden tables and hanging greenery, the environment is just as good as the coffee which is (take my word for it) amazing. I was lucky enough to host an intimate cooking class at the café in the lead up to Christmas where I got bring MoVida to West Melbourne, teaching guests how to make some of my favourite tapas dishes as well as my Movida signature seafood paella. The class was a great success and I can’t wait to go back.

There you have it, just a few of the amazing places that can be found when exploring beautiful West Melbourne. From restaurants, to cafes, shops and gardens, it is a suburb that truly has something for everyone.
